These are specific substances which render the tumour cells sensitive to light. The tumour tissue is then irradiated with visible laser light in the blue to red range. The laser light releases aggressive oxygen molecules, which <strong>destroy the tumours<\/strong>. Since photodynamic therapy (PDT) has hardly any effect on healthy cells, it is also suitable for use on body sites where other treatment modes may cause problems or are difficult to perform.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"cmsmasters_divider_cohc5utdni\" class=\"cmsmasters_divider cmsmasters_divider_width_long cmsmasters_divider_pos_center\"><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cmsmasters_row_inner\">\n<div class=\"cmsmasters_row_margin\">\n<div id=\"cmsmasters_column_\" class=\"cmsmasters_column one_first\">\n<div class=\"cmsmasters_column_inner\"><div class=\"cmsmasters_text\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"cmsmasters_row_j7mhm5uw9m\" class=\"cmsmasters_row cmsmasters_color_scheme_default cmsmasters_row_top_default cmsmasters_row_bot_default cmsmasters_row_boxed\">\n<div class=\"cmsmasters_row_outer_parent\">\n<div class=\"cmsmasters_row_outer\">\n<div class=\"cmsmasters_row_inner\">\n<div class=\"cmsmasters_row_margin\">\n<div id=\"cmsmasters_column_z15qavqu4i\" class=\"cmsmasters_column one_half\">\n<div class=\"cmsmasters_column_inner\"><div class=\"cmsmasters_img  cmsmasters_image_n\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.erweiterte-medizin.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/PDT-Beispiel.jpg\" alt=\"PDT-Beispiel\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div id=\"cmsmasters_column_a3i2jyi4a\" class=\"cmsmasters_column one_half\">\n<div class=\"cmsmasters_column_inner\"><div class=\"cmsmasters_text\">\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ewing&#8217;s sarcoma (ES) is an extremely aggressive form of bone cancer.<br \/>\nSuch a sarcoma was treated with photodynamic therapy here in the Center for Advanced Medicine.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cmsmasters_row_inner\">\n<div class=\"cmsmasters_row_margin\">\n<div id=\"cmsmasters_column_k4xi5o7yia\" class=\"cmsmasters_column one_first\">\n<div class=\"cmsmasters_column_inner\">\n<div id=\"cmsmasters_divider_4uxm61glyn\" class=\"cmsmasters_divider cmsmasters_divider_width_long cmsmasters_divider_pos_center\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"cmsmasters_text\">\n<h3>PDT and its targeted mode of action<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-17205 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.erweiterte-medizin.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/pdt3-300x256.jpg\" alt=\"PDT and its targeted mode of action\" width=\"300\" height=\"256\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.erweiterte-medizin.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/pdt3-300x256.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.erweiterte-medizin.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/pdt3.jpg 410w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Photodynamic therapy is considerably milder for the patient than many other methods, because compared with the treatment approaches that are otherwise used frequently, the side effects and health risks are extremely low.<br \/>\nIn the Center for Advanced Medicine we use chlorin E6, hypericin and curcumin as photosensitizers.<br \/>\nThe effect of the photosensitizing substance is only activated when it is irradiated with laser light at the correct wavelength.<br \/>\nThe laser light is guided to the sites for treatment via a special waveguide and is focused in such a way that <strong>only the tumour cells<\/strong> are exposed to the light.<br \/>\nThe principle of action is based on photochemical processes which are initiated with PDT and attack the tumour specifically.<\/p>\n<p>The photosensitizer is injected into the patient&#8217;s bloodstream, and is then transported throughout the body, but collects mainly in the cancer cells.<br \/>\nThis causes the formation of light-sensitive porphyrins in the cells.<br \/>\nThe porphyrin molecules are transformed into a &#8220;triplet&#8221;
